As particular fans of portable concentrate vaporizers, we were excited to test out the latest and greatest from G-Pen, the G Pen Roam. Releasing very shortly after the G Pen Connect, we were anxious to see if G-Pen had a winner on their hands with the G Pen Roam. After some use, we’re here to offer our honest review so that you’ll have a better idea of whether or not this powerful little portable concentrate vaporizer is worthy of your hard-earned cash.
It’s clear that G-Pen put a lot of time and energy into designing and engineering the G Pen Roam and we’re pretty sure you’ll find something to like in terms of both its design and features. Let’s get started!
How Much Does the G Pen Roam Cost?
Before we get to the really good stuff, let’s talk about that all-important question that any vape enthusiast has when a new portable concentrate vaporizer hits the market: how much does it cost? As you can expect from any premium portable vaporizer, the G Pen Roam doesn’t necessarily come cheap, retailing at C$349.00. Still, once we get to discussing the features and overall performance of this little vaporizer, we’re sure you’ll give it some thought.
What Comes in the Box?
For the price of C$298.95, you’d expect for everything you need to get started to come directly in the box when purchasing the G Pen Roam. Luckily, G-Pen made sure to include all that and more, offering a few accessories that many rival manufacturers would consider extra purchases (we’re talking about cleaning accessories here). Here’s what you’ll find upon opening the box after purchasing a G Pen Roam of your very own:
The vaporizer unit
Mouthpiece and glass tube
Quartz tank complete with cover and housing
Micro USB charging cable
Loading tool

Ergonomic, Sturdy Design
In order to stand apart from the wide variety of portable vaporizers on the market, it’s clear that G-Pen knew they had to do something innovative with the G Pen Roam. Upon taking a look at the device’s design, it’s clear right off the bat that they implemented some pretty unusual features. Before we get to those particular features, however, let’s take a closer look at the overall design of the product.
The Roam boasts an aluminum alloy body that, while feeling durable, also features an ergonomic design that makes it pleasingly comfortable to grip and hold. The bottom is also slightly thicker than the top of the device, making it stable enough to sit upright on its own upon placing it on a table or other flat surfaces.
In terms of button layout, the Roam features a three-button interface equipped with an LED screen. This LED screen also features haptic feedback so you won’t necessarily have to peer down at the device’s screen in environments with a lot of sunlight to take a look at battery or temperature setting. Whenever the device is powered on, the G-Pen logo situated at the front face of the device lights up. Both halves of the device’s body also connect via magnets.
Unusual Yet Innovative Features
Now that you have a pretty good idea of what to expect in terms of design, let’s talk in-depth about the Roam’s features. There are some pretty unusual components included in the G Pen Roam and, while unconventional, they make for a high-quality vaping experience. Let’s take a closer look.
Water Filtration
This is the big feature we’ve been talking about. Yes, the G Pen Roam features a unique self-contained water filtration tube in order to deliver cool, pure vapor. This isn’t a feature you are likely to find in nearly any other portable vaporizer, let alone one meant for concentrates. Up until this point, there have only been two forms of wax vaporizers: e-Nails or dab pens. G-Pen has clearly thrown a wrench into things with the inclusion of a water filtration system in their latest wax pen.
The Roam’s water filtration tube is housed within the body of the device and is completely non-visible during use. Connecting to the removable mouthpiece, the attachment is also completely leakproof so you won’t have to worry about any accidental messes. Once the tube is filled with the water, the device is ready for use.
Heating Coil
The Roam’s heating element is located at the very top of the device. Protective housing meant to spare your fingers covers the quartz coil itself. Cleaning, maintenance, and even loading are very easy thanks to the fact that the housing can slide out of the device itself. Within the housing is the quartz tank with the heating element at the bottom of the device.
Two Heat Activation Modes
The Roam features two heating modes for a convenient, easily customizable experience: automatic and manual. With the automatic heat mode, you simply press the power button twice to activate auto-heat. Once the Roam heats up to your desired temperature, it will vibrate to indicate that the device is ready to vape. The device will then remain hot for 30 seconds before vibrating again to indicate that heat has been deactivated. You can also deactivate the heat manually by clicking the power button twice yet again.
The manual heat mode is activated by clicking and holding the power button. This offers a bit more of a controlled experience where you can heat right up to the best temperature for you. The Roam will not only heat up to the temperature that you indicate but also maintain that heat setting until you release the button.
While there are two heat activation modes, it should also be noted that the Roam also features a max mode. This max mode involves pressing the power button once when the Roam reaches its top temperature of 800 degrees Fareinheit. This will output full power without temperature control. “MAX” will then be displayed on the included LED screen.
If the device were to overheat, a stop sign will appear and the device will power down until it reaches the appropriate temperature. Max mode is best used to clean the device by burning off excess residue as well as for burning extracts that require higher than standard temperatures.
Battery
The G Pen Roam features a 1300 mAh battery. This is an area where we wish G-Pen could have done something a bit differently. After all, for a portable vaporizer at this price point, you’d expect a slightly more powerful battery at least. The Utillian 722, a vaporizer we have reviewed in the past for example, features a 2300 mAh battery that ensures a longer battery life.
All in all, you can expect to get about 20 sessions out of a single charge with the G Pen Roam. While this is satisfactory enough for most vape enthusiasts, there will be some that will wish they had just gone with a vaporizer like the Utillian 722 which handles dry herb as well as extracts.
Overall Performance and Vapor Quality
So what is the G Pen Roam like in terms of vapor quality and overall performance? We are happy to say that the vapor quality found in this portable concentrate vaporizer is incredible. The unconventional inclusion of a water filtration tube in this particular device works wonders for performance and overall vapor quality. For finding just the right flavor for you, the G Pen Roam’s temperature range is more than sufficient. The inclusion of such a long vapor path also works wonders for the delivery of flavorful, cool hits.
Should You Buy the G Pen Roam?
If you’re looking for a unique vaping experience for your next portable concentrate vaporizer, there’s something to love about the G Pen Roam. Despite its hefty price point, it is clear that G-Pen put a lot of thought into the overall design and engineering of this device. It delivers flavorful vapor of high quality and is a lot of fun to use.
That being said, there are other premium vaporizers out there that handle dry herb as well as extracts along with a better battery life for a much cheaper price. If you’re looking for a vaporizer that is a bit more conventional, check out a device such as the Utillian 722 (you can read our review of the Utillian 722 here). Free gifts are also offered if you buy these vaporizers from Haze Smoke Shop online.
